Up the Downers
Berlin-based Israeli garage band TV Buddhas became an Iggy fave last year with the gritty, deeply analogue rock on their self-titled debut EP. Now the trio, comprised of Juval Haring, his wife Mickey Triest, and her brother Uri Triest, are coming out with a fresh single on October 22 that confirms our suspicions about their awesomeness.
Their EP was loud and brooding and a bit of a proto-punk throwback. But the single “Hello to Loneliness” takes things a mile farther. It sounds like it’s drowning in itsself. Their sound has is developing to include hints of The Wipers, Sonic Youth, Joy Division, and The Stooges. That is, they’re embracing everything good and desperate and more than a decade old. It’s brilliant and miserable and we can’t wait for their debut album even though it will probably make us want to not get out of bed.
Stubbornly and appropriately, they’re releasing their new single the old-fashioned way, via 7″ record, complete with a real B-side, “Just Another Day In My Head.” But, in a concession to modern music technology, they put the tracks up on Soundcloud.
We like them even better after watching the trailer for Band In the Modern World, the documentary they made about their harrowing US tour. They’re as morose as their music, in a way that’s kind of fun. When life hands you lemons, make sure you get it on film.
