It's English Dance Rock, It's Potent Pop

Cute band alert! With catchy tunes like “Silent Guns,” which matches choirboy vocals with Strokes-era guitar riffs, New Cassettes’ sophomore album Winterhead places the Northampton quintet in my ”fresh-faced English bands” playlist, next to Two Door Cinema Club and Metronomy. This class of musicians make tight, new wave rock in the footsteps of Joy Division, if Joy Division were sunnier, and more sensitive about girls.

New Cassettes’ sophomore album Winterhead mashes up likable guitar pop and 90s grunge flourishes. Some songs, like “Little Extremes” veer too much into the realm of cute, with saccharine hooks that are trying too hard over disjointed, distorted guitars. But the delicate guitarpicking and poignant lyrics in final track “I Awoke” (my favorite line: “I wouldn’t kick you out of bed/I awoke I was terrified”), shows that this quintet have an instinct for combining clever dance rock and precocious balladry into a potent pop mix.
