His name means skeleton in Afrikaans, and he came to both terrify and delight. With his second album Father Creeper on the label that put out Nirvana, and an omnivorous sound that’s equal parts hip-hop, psych rock, and horror movie, Spoek reps a young, inventive South African music scene. So he was the obvious choice to transform an unexpected space into a mini-concert venue for the night.
This time around, Spoek and his live band invaded a former curry restaurant in Greenwich Village. With smoke machines, amps, and pink strobes, it was like aliens landed on the NYU undergrads passing by, and they didn’t know what hit ‘em.
