Video Roundup: K-pop -The Slo-Mo Drama Beyond the Glitter
Music Video
There are lands that exist only inside the magic of K-pop videos, places peopled with drama queens (and kings). First off, the gothic castle where the leggy ladies of 4Minute live, along with a python and a team of flamenco dancers. They’re turning the “Volume Up” alright with their addictive dance pop, and we’re afraid the mummies next door are waking up. Next up, that hallowed of Korean destinations — Brooklyn. The quintet of Big Bang dance their way underneath the J train tracks, trying and failing to convince their model dates that they’re not “Bad Boys.” Aziatix would rather talk news — footage of anti-war protests torment the trio while they are locked up in what looks like a torture chamber. It’s a socially-conscious take that’s right on for these Asian American brothers. Finally, Tablo and Taeyang bring us to the ultimate Korean music video destination: the endless, empty desert. It’s the perfect stage for gutwrenching heartbreak — which we arrive at escorted by sports care and helicopters, of course.
