Known as the first so-called virtual band, the Gorillaz is depicted as five cartoon band members who live in a fictional universe — but in reality the rock group is only composed of frontman Damon Albarn and cartoonist Jamie Hewlett from Essex, England. The video for “On Melancholy Hill,” the second single off their third studio album Plastic Beach, shows the animated band in an epic battle on the open ocean that turns into an underwater adventure in a shark-shaped submarine. The group soon discovers the infamous plastic beach that gives the album its name, and the wicked looking island is definitely not an ideal vacation spot for the water-drenched crew.
