Toy Selectah Sets His Mex Machine In Motion

By toksala | March 6, 2011

Mexican electro-cumbia DJ/producer Toy Selectah has been working on his EP Mex Machine since at least 2009, and fans have been waiting intently for longer than that. It will finally be out on Mad Decent March 8 and, based on previews, it will be every bit the event it is expected to be.

Toy Selectah achieved legendary status as a member of pioneering Monterrey hip hop group Control Machete and he is now founding a whole new legend as a global bass heavyweight. His style is much more club-friendly and high spirited than a lot of new wave cumbia you may have heard. In fact, he’s definitely using even that hybrid genre as only the most basic of starting points for an intense rhythmic exploration that is entirely his own. The high energy, boundary-ignoring approach is a teensy bit reminiscent of Iggy faves and fellow Mexicans Sonido San Francisco, but other than that he is definitely getting into some musical bushwhacking.

Even better, he’s bringing some friends with him who aren’t exactly light on their feet. DJ/emcee Isa GT does the vocals on “No Pasma” and the Mumdance lends his support on “Ani Riddim.” Monterrey’s Sheeqo Beat remixes “Sonidero Compay.” You can preview the whole album over at the Mad Decent site. You can get even more instantaneous gratification with this sampler.
